Tarascon (aka Tarascon-sur-Rhone), is a Rhone River cruise port. The town is located on the river's east bank, approx 23 km (14 ml) south of Avignon and approx 20 km (12 ml) north of Arles. According to legend, Martha of Bethany (Sainte-Marthe, from the Gospels of Luke and John) landed here and tamed a water dragon that was destroying the river traffic. Sadly, the she was butchered by the locals. Many pilgrims come to see the Royal College created in her honour. Her sanctuary is the city's main monument containing relics and her tomb (in a crypt built on the location of her house).
Tarascon has 3 still remaining city gates. Other popular among tourists attractions are the King Rene castle (located on the river banks opposite to Chateau de Beaucaire), Old Town Hall, Frigolet Abbey, Cloître des Cordeliers, Saint-Jacques church.
