Easy independently. Arles is an exceptionally convenient river-cruise stop. Vessels normally berth along the Rhône quays beside the historic center, and the principal Roman monuments, squares and Van Gogh locations can be reached on foot. Transport is unnecessary unless visiting the Camargue or another destination outside the city.

Getting from the River-Cruise Berth

River vessels use quays close to central Arles, although the precise berth can vary. From most docking positions, the edge of the old town is approximately a 5–10-minute walk away. Passengers generally walk directly from the vessel; a shuttle is not normally needed.

The historic center is compact, but its narrow lanes include cobbles and uneven paving. The area around the amphitheatre is slightly elevated, and visiting its upper levels involves numerous stone steps. Allow additional time if another river vessel is moored alongside yours, as passengers may need to cross it to reach the quay.

Best Ways to Spend Your Time

Explore Roman and Medieval Arles

Allow 3–4 hours for the principal monuments. Begin with the Roman Amphitheatre, then continue to the nearby Ancient Theatre, Place de la République and the Romanesque Church and Cloister of Saint-Trophime. The Cryptoportiques beneath the square and the Baths of Constantine near the river can be added if time permits.

This is the best independent option for a first visit. Most sights are separated by only a few minutes on foot, although entering several monuments can make the route considerably longer.

Follow Van Gogh Through the City

Arles marks locations associated with paintings made by Vincent van Gogh during his stay in 1888–1889. Convenient central stops include the Rhône quays, Place du Forum, the garden at Espace Van Gogh, Place Lamartine and the amphitheatre. The original paintings are generally held elsewhere; the route focuses on the places depicted and uses pavement-side interpretation panels.

Allow 2–3 hours for a central walking circuit. The Pont Van Gogh lies outside the center and requires a taxi, bicycle or tour, so it is not a practical addition to a short walking visit.

Visit LUMA Arles and Les Alyscamps

Travelers interested in contemporary art can combine the landscaped Parc des Ateliers and LUMA Arles with Les Alyscamps, the ancient Roman and early Christian necropolis. Both are southeast of the historic core and can be reached on foot.

Allow 3–4 hours for the round trip and visits. The outdoor areas at LUMA are easy to explore, while access to exhibitions can depend on the current program. Paths at Les Alyscamps may be uneven.

See the Camargue

The wetlands south of Arles are known for birdlife, white horses, cattle, salt landscapes and the coastal village of Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer. These sights are dispersed across a large rural area, making an organized excursion, private driver or prearranged nature tour the practical choice during a port call.

Public buses connect Arles with Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer, but limited departures can make them risky for cruise passengers. Allow at least half a day for a focused Camargue outing and confirm the return schedule before leaving. A guided excursion is preferable when the call is short.

Easy Historic Arles Circuit

Distance: approximately 2.5 km (1.6 mi)
Pure walking time: about 35–45 minutes
Recommended total time: 2.5–4 hours
Difficulty: Easy to moderate, with cobbles, some gentle slopes and steps inside monuments.

1. Rhône quay: Leave the vessel and follow the riverfront toward the historic center.
2. Baths of Constantine: View or enter the remains of the Roman bathing complex close to the river.
3. Place du Forum: See the surviving Roman columns and one of the central locations on the marked Van Gogh route.
4. Place de la République: Visit the square, the Church of Saint-Trophime and, if time allows, its cloister.
5. Ancient Theatre: Walk through the compact historic lanes to the remains of the Roman performance venue.
6. Roman Amphitheatre: Tour the arena or walk around its arcaded exterior.
7. Rhône quay: Return through Rue Voltaire or Place du Forum, depending on the vessel’s berth.

The circuit can be completed without entering every monument in about 90 minutes. Allow closer to four hours if visiting the amphitheatre, theatre and cloister.

Extended Van Gogh and Alyscamps Walk

Distance: approximately 5 km (3.1 mi)
Pure walking time: about 75 minutes
Recommended total time: 3–4.5 hours
Difficulty: Moderate, mainly because of the distance, summer heat and uneven surfaces.

1. Start from the Rhône quay and visit the Van Gogh viewpoint associated with the river.
2. Continue through Place du Forum to Espace Van Gogh and its courtyard garden.
3. Walk past the garden on Boulevard des Lices toward Parc des Ateliers.
4. Explore the public grounds of LUMA Arles.
5. Continue to Les Alyscamps for its tree-lined avenue and ancient sarcophagi.
6. Return through the historic center, passing the Ancient Theatre and amphitheatre before descending to the river.

Skip Les Alyscamps or LUMA if less than three hours remain before the required boarding time.

Practical Tips

• Check current monument and museum hours after arrival; schedules can vary by season, and access may change during festivals or events.
• Choose two or three paid interiors rather than attempting every monument during a short call.
• Wear shoes suitable for cobbled lanes, worn stone steps and uneven archaeological sites.
• Carry water and sun protection in summer. Shade can be limited around the Roman sites and on the walk to LUMA and Les Alyscamps.
• For the Camargue, Saint-Rémy-de-Provence or Les Baux-de-Provence, use a prearranged excursion or driver unless the call is long and transport schedules have been checked carefully.
• Return to the Rhône quay at least 30 minutes before the ship’s stated all-aboard time, allowing more margin after any out-of-town trip.
