Avignon is a Rhone River cruise port located in Provence (south-eastern France). The city has a population of around 90,000. In the Avignon Papacy period (1309-1377), seven popes resided in Avignon. The city was bought in 1348 by Pope Clement VI from Joanna I of Naples. Its papal control persisted until 1791 when during the French Revolution it became part of France.
Among the Avignon's historic landmarks are the Avignon Cathedral (Notre-Dame des Doms, located next to the Palais des Papes /now a museum), Pont d'Avignon, Synagogue, Lapidary Museum, Calvet Museum, churches, chapels.
