Viking Hermod

The 2014-built Longship Viking Hermod cruises on the Saone and Rhone rivers in France, departing from Lyon and Avignon.

This Viking longship is named after Hermod (Hermodr) – in Norse mythology, the son of the gods Odin and Frigg, and brother to Baldur (Balder), the god of light.

Viking’s “green ships” feature solar panels, hybrid energy-efficient engines, and an organic herb garden. Viking Hermod carries 190 passengers who enjoy comfortable amenities such as 40” flat-panel Sony TVs and in-room refrigerators. Guests can also take advantage of the putting green and walking track, or relax in the library corner. Additional facilities include an onboard boutique, laundry service, and complimentary Wi-Fi available shipwide.

The vessel (ENI number 7001977) is currently Switzerland-flagged (MMSI 269057459) and registered in Basel.

Cabins

Viking Hermod offers two Explorer Suites with spectacular 270-degree views and private wraparound verandas. The seven Veranda Suites feature two full rooms, a veranda off the living room, and a French balcony in the bedroom. There are also 39 Veranda Staterooms, 25 Standard Staterooms, and 22 French Balcony Staterooms across 8 categories.

Shipboard facilities

Viking Hermod’s dining options include the Hermod Restaurant (main dining room) and the Aquavit Terrace (al fresco). The indoor-outdoor Aquavit Terrace is located at the bow of the ship and is an ideal spot for relaxation, along with the Sun Deck, which features a shaded seating area and 360-degree views. The Observation Lounge and bar offer panoramic views through floor-to-ceiling glass doors. Other facilities include an Atrium (lobby), Library (Internet access), Shop (gifts and souvenirs), Sky Bar, herbal garden, putting green, walking track, and shuffleboard. The Hermod longship does not have a gym, pool, jacuzzi, or spa.

Viking Hermod cruise deals include Wi-Fi, all tours and excursions, ground transfers, live evening entertainment, daily lectures, food and wine tastings, 24-hour coffee and tea, and replenished daily bottled water.

Viking Hermod river cruise prices are per person and based on double occupancy. River Cruise Itineraries

Below is a list of Viking Hermod river cruise itineraries by theme, as officially announced by Viking Cruises:

• "PORTRAITS OF SOUTHERN FRANCE" are 7-day Rhone and Saone river cruises from Avignon to Chalon, and in reverse from Lyon/Chalon to Avignon. These itineraries include 6 complimentary land tours and excursions in the Provence and Burgundy (France’s wine regions).
• Also included in Viking France river cruise fares are bus transfers (Lyon to Chalon for embarkation, Avignon to Marseille airport), scenic drive (Pommard-Volnay-Meursault), and visits to Beaune (cellar wine tasting), Tournon (red wine tasting), and Chateauneuf-du-Pape (wine tasting).
• "FRANCE FINEST" are 14-day back-to-back river cruise itineraries from Paris to Avignon. These combine a 7-day Seine cruise from Paris (round trip, operated by a Viking ship) with a 7-day Saone-Rhone cruise from Chalon to Avignon (operated by Viking Hermod). On Day 8, guests disembark for a bus transfer from Paris to Chalon (on the Saone River), with a lunch stop and short walking tour in Dijon, followed by embarkation on the Hermod in Chalon. On Day 14, there is an optional tour to Chateauneuf-du-Pape (wine tasting), with an overnight stay in Avignon.

Viking Hermod is part of the latest generation of Viking Cruises longships. This patented river cruise ship design allows for larger accommodations without reducing the size of public areas or compromising overall comfort. The Viking ship Hermod represents the line's latest Longship-class design. Viking Cruises longships feature energy-efficient hybrid engine technology, solar panels, and interior design by "Yran & Storbraaten" (Norway). The patented "longship" design ("Rottet Studios", USA) enables significantly larger passenger accommodations with full-size balconies. The additional cabin space is achieved by shifting the deck corridor off-center by 1 m (3.3 ft).

The other Viking cruise ships in France are the longships Buri, Delling, Forseti, and Heimdal.

The riverboat’s godmother is Mrs. Anne Willan – a world-renowned French culinary authority and author (with over 30 cookbooks), and founder of the "La Varenne" professional cooking school in Paris, France (established in 1975). The ship’s christening ceremony was held in Avignon, France. On March 18, 2014, Hermod was inaugurated together with the Viking longships Buri and Heimdal.
