On July 28, 2018, a polar bear attacked and injured a male guard leading MS Bremen cruise ship tourists on a shore excursion. The bear was shot dead by another guard. The attack occurred when the passengers landed on Spitsbergen Island. The injured man was transported by helicopter to Longyearbyen (on Spitsbergen).
