MS Seaventure Review
Review of MS Seaventure
The 1990-built MS Seaventure cruise ship (“MS Bremen” for Hapag-Lloyd between 1993-2020) was originally constructed as “Frontier Spirit” at Mitsubishi Shipyard in Kobe, Japan. In 2003, MS Bremen discovered a previously uncharted island in Antarctica, later named “Bremen Island.” The ship was featured in the TV series “Killer Wave” (launched in 2007). In 2006, the liner completed a Northwest Passage cruise using real-time satellite data to navigate sea ice.
For Hapag-Lloyd, the vessel (IMO number 8907424) was Bahamas-flagged (MMSI 308429000) and registered in Nassau. After acquisition by Scylla, she was reflagged to Cyprus (MMSI 210081000) with registry in Limassol. In 2025, she was reflagged again to the Bahamas (MMSI 311001633).
In May 2024, Scylla announced the vessel’s sale to an undisclosed buyer, with the deal expected to close later that year. In September 2024, it was revealed that ownership had been transferred to a China-based consortium formed by Guangdong Travel Holding Group and Guangdong Port & Shipping Group. The new owners planned to launch “66 Degrees Expeditions” (66° Expedition Cruise), China’s first polar expedition cruise brand, starting operations in May 2025.
Seasonally, the ship is chartered to Polar Latitudes Expeditions — a travel brand established in October 2025 following the merger of Polar Latitudes and Albatros Travel Group.
History – construction and ownership
On January 15, 2019, it was announced that Hapag-Lloyd had sold the vessel to Scylla. Delivery to the new shipowner (the Swiss family-owned Scylla AG) was originally planned for May 2021. The sale price was not disclosed. As of 2019, Scylla AG owned 31 riverboats, most chartered to various European cruise tour companies.
In mid-July 2020, Hapag-Lloyd confirmed that MS Bremen would not return to service for the company. At the time of the announcement, the 30-year-old vessel was docked in Warnemunde-Rostock, Germany, with scheduled voyages to Antarctica for the 2020-2021 winter season.
MS Seaventure was officially acquired by Scylla AG (shipowner and parent company of VIVA Cruises) from Hapag-Lloyd on November 1, 2020. In 2025, the vessel was sold to/acquired by SEAVENTURE HOLDING HONG KONG (registered shipowner) and operated/managed by its subsidiary 66 EXPEDITIONS CRUISES HK CO.
MS Seaventure last underwent drydock refurbishment in 2025 and until that year was managed by the Cyprus-based RsR Nemo Ship Management Ltd. In 2025, ship management was transferred to Ocean Advice (part of the Basel-based United Waterways Group).
Hapag-Lloyd Cruises (Kreuzfahrten) is a Hamburg-based subsidiary of Hapag-Lloyd AG, currently ranked as the world’s 5th-largest container shipping line by fleet capacity. Until 2017, Hapag-Lloyd Cruises was a wholly owned subsidiary of Europe’s leading travel group TUI AG.

The 168-passenger ship Bremen (later SeaQuest) was acquired by Hapag-Lloyd in April 1993. The Japan-built vessel was purchased in 1992 from Salen Lindblad Cruising and renamed “Frontier Spirit,” beginning operations for Frontier Cruises under the newly established brand “SeaQuest Cruises.” Frontier Spirit became the world’s 4th passenger ship to complete a transit of the Canadian Arctic via the Northwest Passage route.
Between April 2021 and May 2024, the vessel (named “MS Seaventure,” previously “MS Seascape”) was owned by Scylla AG and chartered to its subsidiary VIVA Cruises (a 2019-established travel brand). Seaventure was also seasonally chartered to Polar Latitudes Inc (a Vermont, USA-based tour operator) and Iceland ProCruises (a Reykjavik-based travel company).
During Polar Latitudes charters in the winter months, the ship’s max capacity was reduced to 139 passengers and 90 crew/staff. Polar Latitudes also charters the Noble Caledonia-owned vessels Hebridean Sky and Island Sky. Iceland ProCruises chartered Seaventure in the summer and fall seasons.

Seaventure itineraries (VIVA Cruises)
Hapag-Lloyd’s MS Bremen itinerary program featured South America (Amazon River and Antarctica), Europe (Iceland, Norway/Baltic Sea), and the Caribbean, with seasonal Transatlantic repositioning voyages.
MS Seaventure’s itinerary program began in April 2021. The ship’s inaugural voyage for VIVA Cruises (fleet) was initially scheduled for May 15-21, 2021. The 7-day itinerary sailed from Amsterdam to Hamburg. From homeport Hamburg, 13 roundtrips were scheduled to Baltic Sea ports, Arctic Norway (Spitsbergen Island), and a Transatlantic repositioning voyage (via Iceland and Greenland) to Canada, followed by seasonal deployment to South America.
The 17-day North Atlantic repositioning cruise (Kangerlussuaq, Greenland to Quebec City, Canada) was priced from USD 12,150 per person (double-occupancy outside cabin).

However, in late November 2020, VIVA Cruises rescheduled Seaventure’s maiden voyage (“Springtime Maritime Experiences”) for April 18-25, 2021. The 7-night roundtrip from Bremerhaven, Germany visited Wismar, Szczecin, Stralsund, Copenhagen, Heligoland Island, and Hamburg. Prices started from EUR 2795 (GBP 2470) per person (Outside Cabin, double occupancy).
- Following the inaugural cruise, Seaventure sailed three additional 7-night roundtrip itineraries from Bremerhaven to Malmo and Goteborg (Sweden), Kristiansand (Norway), and Sylt Island (Germany). Prices again started from EUR 2795 per person.

In June 2021, VIVA announced Seaventure’s 2022 program (April–October), introducing new itineraries in Western and Northern Europe (including Arctic destinations) departing from Dublin, Bremerhaven, Leith (Edinburgh), Tromso, and Reykjavik.
- The 7-day “Coastal Magic” itinerary (roundtrip from Dublin on April 16) featured cruising along Ireland’s coast (to Belfast) and northern Scotland (to Edinburgh), followed by port calls in Norway (including Spitsbergen Island).
- The 24-day “Eternal Ice of the Arctic” itinerary (two roundtrips from Bremerhaven in July and August) visited Scotland’s Shetland Islands and completed a Transatlantic crossing to Greenland.
- The 22-day “Beauty of Scandinavia” itinerary (September 2022, from Bremerhaven to Tenerife) covered the Baltic Sea, calling at Oslo, Goteborg, and Copenhagen.
Prices for Seaventure’s 2022 expedition voyages started from EUR 2205 (~GBP 1900) per person (double occupancy).

Bremen is Hapag-Lloyd's smallest cruise ship, yet also the fleet’s toughest vessel. She has the highest ice class (E4) awarded to a passenger ship and is fully equipped to maneuver along Arctic and Antarctic glaciers. The liner carries a fleet of 12 Zodiacs (high-speed motorized boats) used for landings and coastal exploration, launched at any hour (day or night) during polar voyages.
In March 2001, MS Bremen suffered propulsion and power loss during a storm in the South Atlantic Ocean. Unable to continue under her own power, the vessel drifted for approximately two hours. Carrying 137 passengers (German tourists), there was a significant risk of collision and sinking. The crew knew that even with lifeboats, the passengers would not have survived the harsh, freezing conditions. Fortunately, the engines were successfully restarted and the ship escaped disaster.
A fun fact is that in 2003 a previously uncharted island in Antarctica was discovered by MS Bremen and in 2004 was named “Bremen Island.” In 2006, aided by satellite sea-ice imagery, the cruise ship sailed through the Northwest Passage (Canadian Arctic), the route connecting the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. Hapag-Lloyd’s Bremen was also featured in the 2007 TV series “Killer Waves.”
Bremen is the world’s first cruise vessel to operate a Northwest Passage Cruise. In 2011, she crossed the North American passage from Kangerlussuaq, Greenland to Nome, Alaska. In 2012, MS Hanseatic (now Heritage Adventurer) completed a full transit via a 25-day itinerary departing Nome AK (August 14) and ending in Reykjavik, Iceland (September 7).
In August 2017, MS Bremen became the world’s first passenger vessel to receive the “Polar Code” (Polar Ship Certificate), authorizing operations in polar regions. All her fleetmates were scheduled to receive certification by Hapag-Lloyd’s 2018 Arctic season. The Polar Code (adopted by IMO) defines requirements for construction, onboard equipment, and crew training for polar-region cruise vessels. During Hapag-Lloyd’s 2017 routine drydocks, all ships met the Polar Code standards and were certified. MS Bremen was scheduled to operate three Arctic voyages in the 2018-2019 season, including one Northeast Passage cruise (summer 2018).
Since January 2019, the ship’s Captain has been Ulf Sodemann, with Hapag-Lloyd AG (company’s containership division) since 2005.
In May 2019, the shipowner Scylla AG announced that MS Bremen would be chartered from May 2021 to Polar Latitudes Inc for Arctic and Antarctica itineraries.
As of October 2020, the registered shipowner was SCYLLA OCEAN LTD, while management was handled by RSR NEMO SHIP MANAGEMENT LTD.
