List auf Sylt is a port town on Wadden Sea (North Sea), located on Sylt Island (Schleswig-Holstein state, Germany) and close to Denmark. The island is Germany's northernmost municipality and part of Nordfriesland district. Sylt Island is the largest of North Frisian Islands. It has land area 99 km2 (38 ml2), length 38 km (24 ml), width 13 km (8 ml), highest elevation point (Uwe-Dune) 52 m (171 ft), and total population around 21,000. List auf Sylt's population is under 2,000.
As Danish village, List (Lystum) was first mentioned in 1292. The settlement was destroyed by the flood of 1364, then rebuilt further east from its original location. The locals live mostly from Oyster farming, sheeping and gull eggs. List was also an important anchorage (north of the current town) for the Danish fleet. After the Second Schleswig War (February-October 1864) between Denmark and Germany, List was annexed by Prussia. After WW1 (1914-1918), the Denmark-Germany border was drawn north of List, with Romo Island returned to Denmark.
During WW1, List was a German air base serving naval planes. In 1927 was opened a pilot training school for both civilian and military pilots. Much of the current town was built in the 1930s by the Nazis who expanded the navy installations and added housing for the personnel. Town's population also grew - from around 500 (1933) to over 3000 (1939, excluding the based here military).
List auf Sylt current economy is heavily based on tourism industry. Here is also Germany's only commercial oyster farm (owned by Jurgen Gosch) that produces Sylter Royal (sea-maturing oysters). Among the tourist attractions are Erlebniszentrum Naturgewalten (marinelife-themed interactive museum) and a 35-m (115-ft) high Ferris wheel (in the harbour). The island has two lighthouses and a 40-km long sandy beach. Sylt Island has only one road, connecting List with Westerland.
Romo-Sylt-Linie is a regularly scheduled ferry service that links List auf Sylt with Havneby (Romo Island, Denmark). The ferry route is currently served by SyltExpress (capacity 599 passengers, 76 cars).
