MS Paul Gauguin (built in 1997, last refurbished in February–March 2025) is a top-luxury, Tahiti-based cruise ship operating year-round in French Polynesia (South Pacific Ocean), offering roundtrip itineraries from her homeport Papeete (Tahiti Island). Between 2012 and 2015, her fleetmate was Tere Moana. Prior to 2009, the vessel was operated by Pacific Beachcomber (a luxury hotels and resorts company), with shipowner Grand Circle Travel (tour and river cruise operator) and technical management by RSSC (Regent Seven Seas Cruises).
In early August 2019, the French luxury brand Ponant Cruises acquired Paul Gauguin Shipping Ltd (headquartered in Bellevue, Washington, USA) and its brand “Paul Gauguin Cruises.” Following the acquisition, both cruise companies retained their existing management structures. MS Paul Gauguin’s current shipowner is Ponant.
MS Paul Gauguin’s deck plan shows a total of 160 staterooms accommodating up to 332 passengers (maximum capacity), served by 217 crew members. The ship has 9 decks (7 accessible to passengers, 5 with cabins), 3 restaurants, 4 lounges and bars, 1 swimming pool (no Jacuzzis or outdoor whirlpool hot tubs), a retractable Marina Platform (for watersports), 4 elevators, and a medical facility with an onboard doctor.
MS Paul Gauguin deck plan changes/refurbishments review
The 2025 drydocking (February–March) in Singapore was an extensive, multi-million-dollar refurbishment project featuring redesigned and fully renovated public spaces and passenger staterooms. Key highlights included 8 new Connecting Staterooms (added on Deck 7); the refit and renovation of Le Grill (with white wood finishes, oak furnishings, ceramic accents, bamboo light fixtures, and floor-to-ceiling windows); and upgrades to the Pool Deck and Pool Bar (new teak decking, a mosaic-wrapped pool façade, a white canopy for shaded relaxation, and carved white wood screens with new ambient lighting). Public spaces and staterooms were refreshed with tropical-inspired color palettes, reupholstered furnishings, new carpeting, and restored woodwork.
In addition to routine maintenance and classification works, hull cleaning and repainting, and machinery overhauls, the vessel was upgraded with energy-efficient chillers, heat recovery systems, an Organic Rankine Cycle (onboard electricity generation) system, a seawater treatment plant (freshwater production), a Nordaq water filtration system, and enhanced waste management systems (including glass crushers and compactors).
The vessel’s previous extensive drydock refurbishment in 2012 (USD 7 million) resulted in new dining menus, an expanded spa menu, a remodeled Casino Lounge, cabin upgrades, and renovated public spaces. New shore excursions were also added to the Paul Gauguin Cruises program.
