The number of cruise ship accidents has increased with the surge in global cruise shipping fleet. From a total of 55 ships which sank in the period 1979-2013, fifteen were reported to have sunk in the 3-year period 2010-2013.
Furthermore, 448 major accidents have been reported since 2005. 66 out of 131 passenger cruise ships ran aground in the period 2005-2013.
