Genoa and Savona ports expand quays to accommodate ultra-large cruise vessels

A comprehensive large-scale infrastructure plan has been implemented at the passenger ports of Genoa and Savona, with developments underway across their cruise terminals.

With an initial investment exceeding EUR 40 million, the Western Ligurian Sea Port Authority is prepared to accommodate the arrival of ultra-large cruise vessels. This initiative aims to ensure seamless, safe, integrated, and sustainable accessibility for the ships and the 5+ million passengers who visit the Ports of Genoa annually.

The robust growth and rapid advancement of the cruise sector not only enhance tourism in the city-ports but also bolster the local shipbuilding and refitting industry, vital components of the Italian blue economy. To manage the increasing cruise passenger traffic responsibly, strict standards regarding environmental protection and sustainability are enforced across both the Ports of Genoa and Savona.

To reduce carbon emissions and minimize noise pollution in adjacent urban areas, the Port Authority has allocated EUR 30 million for the installation of on-shore power supply facilities at the terminals. These facilities will be available to all cruise ships, allowing them to switch off generators while docked. Currently, the installation of the power supply unit and cables is in progress at the Stazioni Marittime terminal, undertaken by the contractor Nidec.

Furthermore, construction has commenced at Ponte dei Mille Levante to extend the quayline from 290 meters (951 ft) to 376 (1234 ft) meters. This expansion aims to accommodate the latest generation of ultra-large vessels, including the World Class ships, ensuring full safety measures are in place by 2025. By then, the terminal will be equipped with two quays capable of simultaneously hosting the next generation of ships.

Recent dredging activities, reaching a depth of -11 meters (-36 ft), and quay retrofitting were completed in 2023. Additionally, retrofitting activities on the Cesare Imperiale Viaduct, a 300-meter (984-feet) scenic waterfront promenade connecting Ponte dei Mille to the Ponte Andrea Doria Terminal, are nearing completion within the cruise passenger area.
