Holyhead handles majority of Wales’ increased cruise shipping traffic

Wales recorded 84 cruise ship visits in 2025, a more than 100% increase compared to the 41 visits logged in 2021, underlining its growing stature as a destination of choice.

Among its 5 cruise-capable ports—Cardiff, Swansea, Milford Haven, Fishguard and Holyhead—the port of Holyhead handled the bulk of the traffic, with 55 of the 84 ships calling there.

Holyhead’s infrastructure enables it to berth vessels up to 300 m/984 ft in length. For larger ships that cannot dock directly, a tendering system allows passengers to be transferred ashore from anchorage zones, ensuring access even for the world’s largest liners.

Tourism already contributes some GBP 3.8 billion to the Welsh economy annually, and the influx of cruise visitors further channels spending into coastal communities, hospitality services, tours, retail and cultural attractions.

Wales’ appeal to cruise operators and passengers stems from its rich heritage, dramatic landscapes, and a network of ports that provide gateways into diverse experiences—ancient castles, natural wilderness, and vibrant towns—all within reach of the sea lanes.
