A-ROSA deploys AI-scales to curb food waste at sea

A-ROSA has introduced smart waste-analysis systems aboard three of its ships, deployed in two distinct cruise regions, aiming to enhance its management of food waste. The technology utilises AI-assisted scales that automatically measure discarded food and provide detailed analytics, which are already yielding a reduction in waste on board.

The initiative forms part of A-ROSA’s broader sustainability strategy. By collecting precise data, the systems allow the line to refine purchasing, adjust menus, train crew more effectively, and streamline onboard operational processes. The enhanced visibility into food waste also serves to raise awareness of responsible food handling among passengers and crew alike.

Food waste is recognised as carrying multiple consequences: it consumes energy, land, and water resources; it contributes significantly to greenhouse gas emissions; and it exacerbates social inequality by misallocating resources that could otherwise be available where they are needed.

With the introduction of these AI-driven scales, A-ROSA moves closer to embedding sustainability into daily shipboard routines, aiming to align its operations more closely with environmental responsibility while maintaining guest service standards.
