Costa CruisesCosta Serena will be deployed as a floating accommodation vessel during the 2026 Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games in Japan. The ship will be moored at Kinjo Pier in Nagoya Port and will serve as temporary housing for athletes and officials throughout the duration of the event.

The Aichi-Nagoya Organising Committee (AINAGOC) confirmed that a charter agreement has been concluded with the Nagoya Business Division of JTB, the official representative of Costa Cruises in Japan. Under this arrangement, the Costa Serena will remain in port from September 15th to October 6th, 2026, coinciding with the Games, which are scheduled to take place from September 19th to October 4th.

The Italian-registered vessel measures 290 meters in length and has a gross tonnage of approximately 114,000. With around 1,500 guest cabins and a full complement of amenities—including restaurants, lounges, pools, and fitness facilities—the ship is designed to accommodate both rest and recreation for the athletes and support personnel onboard.

The decision to employ a cruise ship as a “floating village” rather than construct a new athletes’ complex reflects a pragmatic approach aimed at minimizing costs and reducing construction timelines. The Costa Serena’s proximity to several competition venues near Nagoya Port makes it a practical and efficient lodging solution. JTB Nagoya, acting as the charter operator, will oversee coordination with Costa Cruises to ensure operational continuity throughout the event.

Approximately 4,000 athletes and staff members are expected to reside aboard the vessel, while an additional 2,400 individuals will be housed in nearby temporary accommodations. Shuttle transport will connect both housing sites with the various sports venues. The Costa Serena will offer a full range of services comparable to those found in conventional athletes’ villages, including meal provision, recreation areas, and dedicated medical and support facilities, ensuring a comfortable stay for participants during the Games.
