A passenger died after falling from a balcony onto a lower exterior deck of NCL-Norwegian Cruise Line’s Norwegian Getaway during the final night of a 3-night Bahamas cruise.
The incident occurred late on Sunday, August 23rd, as the ship was returning to Miami after departing PortMiami on August 21st and visiting Nassau and Great Stirrup Cay.
Passengers reported hearing an emergency announcement between ~11:00 p.m. and midnight. Crew members and medical personnel responded to the lower deck, where the passenger had fallen and began providing emergency assistance.
Norwegian Cruise Line subsequently confirmed that a guest had gone over a balcony and fallen onto a lower deck. The crew immediately administered life-saving measures, but the passenger did not survive. The company expressed its condolences to the passenger’s family. The individual’s identity has not been released.
The Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office Homicide Bureau is reportedly investigating the incident as an unclassified death.
In the absence of detailed information from the cruise line and authorities, various accounts of the incident circulated among passengers and on social media. Some passengers reported seeing crew members gathered around the area where the emergency response took place, while other accounts referred to events that allegedly occurred earlier in the evening.
Those reports included unconfirmed claims concerning possible intoxication, an altercation and an incident in the ship’s theater. Other passenger accounts differed over the deck from which the fall occurred. None of these details has been confirmed by Norwegian Cruise Line or investigators, and it has not been established whether alcohol, an altercation or any other circumstance contributed to the death.
Norwegian Cruise Line has confirmed only that the passenger went over a balcony and landed on a lower deck. The circumstances leading to the fall therefore remain under investigation.
The incident also generated questions among passengers about the limited information provided while the ship was still at sea. Cruise operators generally restrict public comments following deaths onboard because of considerations involving the privacy of the deceased and their family, medical confidentiality and ongoing investigations. The Norwegian Getaway arrived at PortMiami on Monday, August 24th, according to schedule, with no publicly reported disruption to the arrival or disembarkation process. The ship subsequently began its next scheduled 4-night Bahamas cruise from Miami.
