Bahamian Government backs cruise and cargo port for Mayaguana

Plans are underway for the development of a new cruise port on Mayaguana, one of the southernmost islands in the Bahamas, located approximately 350 miles southeast of Nassau. The island, known for its limited development and relatively untouched environment, has been identified for a port project intended to accommodate both cruise and cargo operations.

The Bahamian government has confirmed that it has entered into a partnership with private-sector developers to advance the project. The development is structured in three phases, beginning with the construction of a deepwater port and a temporary marine offloading facility designed to support initial maritime operations.

The second phase is expected to focus on the establishment of a dedicated cruise terminal, allowing Mayaguana to receive visiting passenger vessels. A final phase would expand the facility further with the addition of a deepwater transshipment port and infrastructure capable of handling larger ships.

Situated northwest of the Turks and Caicos Islands, Mayaguana has been described by the Ministry of Tourism as the least developed island in the Bahamian archipelago. Under the proposed ownership structure, the government will hold a stake in the port alongside the locally based Mayaguana Island Development Fund and Global Lead Consultant Group Ltd. No timeline has yet been released regarding the commencement of cruise operations at the new facility.
