Oceania Cruises announces first entirely gluten-free ocean voyage

Oceania Cruises has announced what it describes as the cruise industry’s first entirely gluten-free ocean voyage, scheduled to sail aboard Oceania Vista in 2028. The 12-night roundtrip itinerary will depart Southampton on May 31st, 2028, and visit destinations in England, Ireland and Scotland, including Cork (Cobh), Dublin (Dún Laoghaire), Glasgow (Greenock), Stornoway in the Hebrides and Edinburgh (Newhaven).

The sailing is being developed to provide a fully gluten-free culinary experience across the ship’s dining programme, eliminating the need for guests to assess individual menus, question preparation methods or manage concerns about cross-contact. Oceania Cruises Chief Luxury Officer Jason Montague said the initiative would allow the line’s culinary team to adapt its onboard dining programme to an entirely gluten-free format while maintaining its established focus on quality, variety and culinary creativity.

All dining venues aboard Oceania Vista will offer entirely gluten-free menus during the voyage. The programme will cover specialty restaurants including Toscana, Polo Grill, Red Ginger and Jacques, as well as more casual venues such as Aquamar Kitchen and Waves Grill. Afternoon tea, in-suite dining and freshly baked pastries from The Bakery will also be included in the gluten-free offering.

The initiative is intended to address the additional planning often required by travellers following a gluten-free diet, particularly those with coeliac disease. During the voyage, guests will not need to routinely check ingredients, discuss preparation procedures or assess the potential for cross-contact when selecting meals.

Oceania Cruises is developing the sailing in collaboration with Celiac Cruise, which has experience organising gluten-free travel programmes for the coeliac and wider gluten-free communities. The company will contribute its expertise to the planning of the culinary programme and serve as an official booking partner for the voyage.

Celiac Cruise founder Maureen Basye said the initiative would reduce the amount of food-related planning required for travellers with coeliac disease. She noted that having the entire culinary programme designed around gluten-free requirements would allow guests to concentrate more on the destinations, companions and overall travel experience rather than managing dietary restrictions throughout the journey.
