Cruise activity returned to PhilaPort/Port Philadelphia (Pennsylvania) with the departure of Norwegian Jewel, marking the first such sailing from the port in 15 years.

The cruise vessel arrived earlier the same day, berthing at the new PhilaPort Cruise Terminal, where it later commenced its outbound voyage in the evening, signalling the operational reactivation of the terminal.

Scheduled operations will see the vessel engaged in a series of roundtrip itineraries between Philadelphia and Bermuda (King's Wharf) through August. Although construction at the terminal remains ongoing, port authorities indicated in formal communications that berthing and departure schedules would proceed without interruption, maintaining adherence to planned operations.

The embarkation drew public attention, with local ceremonial elements present at the quay as passengers boarded. Travellers expressed acknowledgement of the restoration of cruise departures from the city, noting that the renewed service offered opportunities previously unavailable during the prolonged absence of such operations.

The sailing carried 2300+ passengers aboard a vessel that had undergone recent refurbishment, including upgrades to onboard amenities and accommodations. Representatives from the travel sector observed that the ship’s facilities provided a range of services suited to varied passenger requirements, contributing to the appeal of the itineraries.

Officials at the municipal and state levels attended the departure, regarding the resumption of cruise activity as a development of economic significance. Projections indicated that, upon completion of the terminal works, operations could generate substantial economic impact, including the creation of 2000+ direct and indirect positions and revenue ~US$300 million for the local economy.

Looking ahead, further itineraries are planned for the autumn season, including voyages to Canada and New England. Port authorities indicated that the current deployment forms part of a broader strategy to expand cruise services and attract additional operations in the future, restoring Philadelphia’s position within regional cruise networks.
