CCL-Carnival trials robotic hull cleaning system on Pride ship

CCL-Carnival Cruise Line has begun testing a new underwater robotic hull-cleaning system aboard Carnival Pride, making the vessel the first in the fleet to evaluate the technology as part of the company's efforts to improve operational efficiency and reduce environmental impact.

Developed by marine coatings and hull performance specialist Jotun, the Hull Skating Solutions (HSS) system incorporates the remotely operated HullSkater robot, which is permanently based aboard the ship. The robot is deployed below the waterline to inspect and clean the hull, removing early-stage marine growth before significant fouling develops. Equipped with cameras and sensors, the system allows inspections and cleaning to be carried out while the vessel remains in service, eliminating the need to wait until fouling becomes more severe.

Maintaining a clean hull reduces hydrodynamic resistance, enabling the ship to move through the water more efficiently. As propulsion accounts for the majority of a cruise ship's energy consumption, reducing drag can lower fuel consumption and contribute to reduced emissions.

The pilot programme aboard Carnival Pride will provide Carnival Cruise Line with operational data to assess the system's performance under normal service conditions before determining whether the technology could be introduced across additional vessels in the fleet. Jotun said the collaboration reflects Carnival's interest in evaluating innovative solutions designed to enhance vessel performance while supporting the company's long-term sustainability objectives.
