Royal Caribbean announced an early 2021 refurbishment for Liberty of the Seas when it released the line's 2020-2021 cruise schedule, and at the time said that the move would be part of the company's Royal Amplified fleet modernization effort. The project represents a 4-year, US$1 billion effort to revamp ten of the RCI ships, beginning with Mariner of the Seas, Independence of the Seas, and Oasis of the Seas. The project will eventually include the entire Freedom and Voyager class of ships.
