Alert Bay is located on Cormorant Island (British Columbia, Canada). The village has a population of around 1500 people and a total area of 1.78 km2 (0.69 ml2). More than 50% of the village's esidents are First Nations people. Alert Bay is in the traditional Kwakwaka'wakw territory. A couple of Indian Reserves take up the rest of the island, Alert Bay 1 is located on the east side of Cormorant Island, and Alert Bay 1A is on the west.
Alert Bay has museums, doctors' offices, a hospital, drug store, drug and alcohol treatment centre, dental clinic, post office, grocery store, traditional 'big house', RCMP station, 3 restaurants, pub, retail gift shops, BC liquor store, Royal Canadian Legion. Alert Bay Drugs features automated teller machine exterior of the building and ATM inside Bayside Pub. Alert Bay has its Alert Bay Airport, public airport and Alert Bay Water Aerodrome. There is also a boat harbour and BC Ferries terminal with service to Port McNeill and Sointula. Alert Bay also boasts a campground and ecological park consisting of cedar swamp and an area of old-growth trees. Alert Bay is also the home to the tallest totem pole in the world.
In 1921, Canada's Government, in an effort to cease the potlatch custom of song, dance and wealth distribution under 116th Section of Indian Act, confiscated plenty of items including copper shields, dance regalia and wooden masks. During the 1970s and 1980s, the Kwakwaka'wakw regained possessions after hard negotiations. The returned artifacts are now housed in a museum at U’mista Cultural Centre.
Volcanic features in the territory around Alert Bay are part of Alert Bay Volcanic Belt and it appears to have been active during Pliocene and Miocene times. No Holocene eruptions are seen, and volcanic activity in this belt has probably ceased.
