Nantucket is an island located 20 km (14 miles) south of Cape Cod, in the state of Massachusetts, United States. Along with the small islands of Muskeget and Tuckernuck, it forms the Town of Nantucket, as well as neighboring county of Nantucket, that are consolidated. In 2010 the population was 10,170 on a total area of 272.6 km2 (105.3 ml2). Part of the town is designated Nantucket CDP (census-designated place). Surfside region on Nantucket Island is the southernmost settlement found in Massachusetts.
The name "Nantucket" possibly means "faraway land or island". It is adapted from analogous Algonquian names for the isle.
Nantucket is a popular summer colony and tourist destination. Due to seasonal residents and tourists, the population of Nantucket Island increases to at least 50,000 people during the summer. In 2008, Forbes magazine cited the island as "having home values among the highest in the United States". Home prices per ft2 are considered much higher than those in Hamptons on Long Island.
National Park Service cites the island of Nantucket (designated in 1966 National Historic Landmark District), as being the "finest surviving architectural and environmental example of a late 18th- and early 19th-century New England seaport town".
Nantucket Island is reached by sea from mainland by Steamship Authority, Freedom Cruise Line, Hy-Line Cruises, or by private boat. In 2002 a task force was formed to consider limiting the number of vehicles on Nantucket, in an effort to fight against heavy traffic during summer months.
