Praslin is the second largest island of the Seychelles, lying 27 miles (44 km) northeast of Mahé. It has a population of around 7,500 people and comprises 2 administrative districts: Grand' Anse and Baie Sainte Anne. The main settlements are Anse Volbert, Baie Ste Anne and Grand' Anse.
In 1744 Praslin was named "Isle de Palmes" by explorer Lazare Picault. During that time it was used as a hideaway by Arab merchants and pirates. In 1768 the isle was renamed Praslin in honor of the French diplomat César Gabriel de Choiseul, duc de Praslin.
The island of Praslin is known as a tourist destination with several resorts and hotels, as well as a number of beaches like Anse Georgette and Anse Lazio. It has substantial areas of tropical forests with birds like the Seychelles bulbul and black parrot. Vallée de Mai Nature Preserve, founded in 1979, is known for the unique vanilla orchids and coco de mer. According to General Charles George Gordon of Khartoum (1833-1885) Vallée de Mai was the Biblical "Garden of Eden".
Twice in a couple of weeks in August 2011 bull sharks entered the 'safe bathing' area inside the coral reef of Anse Lazio and killed swimmers less than 30 m (100 ft) from shore. These were the first recorded fatal shark attacks in the Seychelles for 50 years and none have been recorded after 2011.
A vast area in the south of the isle has been designated Praslin National Park and surrounding areas Important Bird Area.
