The Port Chiapas (Puerto Chiapas) is a port located in Puerto de San Benito, Tapachula municipality of Soconusco region in the southern portion of the state of Chiapas, Mexico. The port entrance lies 13 kilometres (8.1 miles) northwest of the mouth of Suchiate River - the international boundary between Guatemala and Mexico. Puerto de San Benito is connected to Tapachula International Airport and Tapachula city by Highway 225. The land area of Puerto Chiapas is 60,000 m2 (15 acres) container storage.
Since its opening in 1975, Port Chiapas has been a tiny agricultural and fishing transport center. Upgrades carried out since 2005 by the government have added cruise ships and heavy cargo facilities. Governor Juan Sabines Guerrero ordered port's development in the hopes it would attract business to Puerto Chiapas, currently the poorest Mexican state. Ships of Regent Seven Seas Cruises, Oceania Cruises, Norwegian Cruise Line and Holland America Line currently arrive in Port Chiapas.
There is little of interest to cruise passengers in the immediate vicinity of Puerto Chiapas. As one leaves the dock, there is a craft market, but the nearest city of Tapachula is a few miles inland. Port's eastern horizon is dominated by Volcan Tacana and a number of biological reservations and ruins are accessible from it.
Highlights: Tapachula, Union Juarez, Izapa ruins
