Port Chiapas (Puerto Chiapas, aka Puerto Madero) is a seaport on the Pacific Ocean. It is located in the Soconusco region of southern Chiapas (state in Mexico). The harbour entrance is approx 13 km (8 ml) northwest of the mouth of Suchiate River - the Guatemala-Mexico state boundary. Puerto Chiapas is connected to Tapachula Airport by Highway 225. The port has approx 6 hectares (15 acres) sized container storage area.

Since its opening in 1975, Port Chiapas has been a tiny agricultural and fishing transport center. Upgrades carried out since 2005 by the government have added cruise ships and heavy cargo facilities. Governor Juan Sabines Guerrero ordered port's development in the hopes it would attract business to Puerto Chiapas, currently the poorest Mexican state. Ships of RSSC-Regent Seven Seas, Oceania, NCL-Norwegian Cruise Line and Holland America Line currently arrive in Port Chiapas.

There is little of interest to cruise passengers in the immediate vicinity of Puerto Chiapas. As one leaves the dock, there is a craft market, but the nearest city of Tapachula is a few miles inland. Port's eastern horizon is dominated by Volcan Tacana and a number of biological reservations and ruins are accessible from it.

Puerto Chiapas cruise terminal

From Puerto Chiapas cruise terminal is provided a shuttle bus service to Tapachula City. Tickets can be purchased in the pyramid-styled passenger terminal building. Shuttle buses run daily between the terminal and downtown Tapachula City (one-way travel time approx 40 min).

The cruise ship terminal consists of 2 buildings. The bigger one houses a market (with local vendor-sold merchandise) and an event space. The smaller building has restaurant and bar (both with Wi-Fi Internet access).
