Rio Grande is a city located on the north coast of the eastern part of Isla Grande de Tierra del Fuego, Argentina. It has a population of 67,040 (2010 Census), and is the industrial capital of Tierra del Fuego Province. Río Grande is served by Hermes Quijada International Airport. The city has a total area of 12,181 km2 (4,703 ml2).
Sheep farming, as other places in Patagonia, was the primary impetus for population settlements in the late 19th century. The seacoast, good pastures and abundant rivers were some of the reasons which fueled population growth. The city of Río Grande was established on July 11, 1921. The central government issued a decree which recognised the locality as "Agricultural Colony of Río Grande".
The land was initially subdivided among several families, owning large estates until the 1925 agrarian reform. Cattle raising became one of the major economic activities in the region.
To promote industrial development, Isla Grande de Tierra del Fuego is excluded from federal income tax and VAT. As a result, a few manufacturing companies, especially those involving electronic products, opened factories in Río Grande. One of the most rapidly growing is the sector of production of netbooks and laptops. Until 2006 these products were totally imported. However, by 2010, 42% of Argentine market for such goods was supplied by companies established in Rio Grande and Vicente Lopez.
The population of Rio Grande has grown rapidly since 1980. Lots of people have relocated from Argentina's northern parts and from other countries, like Bolivia, to work in factories offering higher wages than other parts of the country.
