Salalah is the capital and seat of the governor (wali) of the southern province of Dhofar, Oman. Its population in 2009 was 197,170. Salalah is the 2nd largest city in Oman's Sultanate, and the largest city in Dhofar Province. It is also the birthplace of Oman's Sultan, Qaboos bin Said. The city attracts lots of people from Oman and GCC during Khareef season, from July to September. The climate of the area and the monsoon allows Salalah to grow some vegetables and fruits (coconut).
Salalah is one of the only two places in Arabian peninsula (besides Yemen) which experiences a monsoon season ("Khareef"). In Arabic, Khareef means “autumn”, but when describing Salalah, it refers to monsoon. The brown landscape of Salalah and the surrounding areas is completely transformed during this time to a beautiful, lush green. Locals and tourists flock to Salalah then.
The Port of Salalah is one of the largest on the Arabian Peninsula. It is area's major transshipment hub for container shipping and is managed by APM Terminals, part of A. P. Moller-Maersk Group, Denmark. The Port of Salalah is also among the most vital on the peninsula. It connects Africa, Asia and the Middle East. The port is located outside the city, to the south and is also the biggest private employer in Dhofar region. Salalah Free Zone, right beside the Port of Salalah, is emerging as a new center for the Middle East's heavy industries.
The Port of Salalah is one of Oman's deepwater ports and was formerly known as Mina' Raysut/Port Raysut, or Raysut Harbour. It can accommodate large ships up to 18 m draft, and welcomes luxury ships and cruise liners.
