San Juan del Sur is a coastal town and municipality on the Pacific Ocean, in Rivas department, southwest Nicaragua. It is situated 140 kilometres (87 miles) south of Managua and is a popular vacation spot among surfers, foreign tourists and Nicaraguan families.
The population of San Juan del Sur is approximately 15,550 and consists largely of families engaged in tourism industry or fishing and foreigners from Europe, Canada and the United States. The area of the municipality is 411 km2 (159 ml2). While for many years the local economy was based on shipping and fishing, in the last 20 years it has shifted towards tourism. In October 2002, to mark the 150th anniversary of San Juan del Sur, it was designated the "Port of San Juan del Sur" and "Tourism City of Nicaragua."
San Juan del Sur was a resting place for gold prospectors in the 1850s. Correspondingly, it served as a hub for Cornelius Vanderbilt Lines. Today tourists are coming to San Juan del Sur from all over the world including Americans and Europeans. It is possible for cruise vessels that have missed scheduled port visit to dock and offload in the region. The influx of tourism feeds the tourist dependent businesses in San Juan, including the ones visiting off of a cruise ship the many restaurants and boutiques in San Juan del Sur. San Juan also offers about 11 established hostels and accomidations of all kinds.
A statue of Christ of the Mercy sits above San Juan del Sur on the bay's northern end. Mirador del Cristo de la Misericordia lies on one of the highest points and is one of the tallest statues of Jesus in the world.
San Juan del Sur is near the spot where 'Survivor: Nicaragua' and 'Survivor: Redemption Island' were filmed in 2010 and 2011, respectively. The 29th Survivor season, 'Survivor: San Juan del Sur' (2014), and Season 30, 'Survivor: Worlds Apart' (2015) were also filmed there. San Juan del Sur is a spot for international surfing competition.
