Sandakan is the second-largest port city located on the Borneo Island's eastern coast. Sandakan has population of around 160,000 (metropolitan area population is around 400,000), ranking it the Sabah states' second largest city - after Kota Kinabalu (population around 450,000) on Borneo's northeastern coast. Sandakan was the capital of British North Borneo Company (aka North Borneo Chartered Company) between 1881 and 1897.
