Vidin is a port town situated on the southern bank of Danube River in north-western Bulgaria. Vidin is close to the borders with Serbia and Romania, and is also the administrative centre of the province of Vidin, as well as of the Vidin Metropolitan (since 870). A trade and agricultural centre, it has a fertile hinterland famous for its wines. The name of the town is archaically spelled in English as "Widdin". Old name "Dunonia" in Celtic meant "fortified hill" with the typically dun found in Celtic place names.
Vidin is 20th by population in Bulgaria. The area has experienced serious demographic problems during the last two decades. In February 2011, Vidin had a population of 47,140 inhabitants. The total city area is 63.218 km2 (24.409 ml2).
Vidin maintains two medieval fortresses, Kaleto and Baba Vida, that are well-preserved. The city also boasts many old Orthodox churches, including Saint Pantaleimon, Saint Petka (both from 17th century), and Saint Dimitar (Demetrius of Thessaloniki) (19th century), Vidin Synagogue (1894), Osman Pazvantoglu Mosque and library, late 18th-century Turkish ruler of north-western Bulgaria, Krastata Kazarma (1798), and several old Renaissance buildings. The theatre building, built in 1891, is also remarkable. It was the first theatre in Bulgaria in "European model".
Another tourist attraction in Vidin area is Belogradchik, a town famous for its unique rock formations, Belogradchik Rocks and medieval Belogradchik Fortress, as well as nearby Magura Cave with its prehistoric cave paintings.
