15 November 2022Crew / Passenger Deaths(World Explorer) On November 15, 2022, two male passengers died during a Zodiac boat excursion (launched from the ship) close to Elephant Island (Antarctica). They both drowned after the semi-rigid motorized boat (carrying 6 passengers plus 2 crew/expedition staff) overturned/capsized near shore. The accident was officially confirmed by Quark Expeditions in a statement on Nov 18th. Reportedly, the sea was smooth, with just light winds, and the boat was overturned by a breaking wave. The deceased were elderly Americans (aged 76 and 80). World Explorer was on a 14-night "South Georgia and Antarctic Peninsula Penguin Safari" (cruisetour) roundtrip from homeport Ushuaia (Argentina). |
