Astoria Grande cruise ship forced to leave the Georgian Black Sea port of Batumi

   July 28, 2023 ,   Accidents

On July 27th, the Astoria Grande cruise ship carrying ~800 passengers, including Russians, was compelled to depart from Port Batumi (Georgia) shortly after arriving from homeport Sochi (Russia).

This decision came after groups of Georgians protested the ship's presence in Batumi.

The protests erupted in Batumi and Georgia's capital Tbilisi when some Russian tourists on the ship expressed their support for Russia's 2008 war against Georgia and claimed that Moscow had "liberated" Abkhazia, a breakaway region that Georgia lost control of during the conflict.

During the demonstrations, protesters burned Russia's flag and displayed banners with anti-Russian slogans.
