Guernsey UK rejoins Cruise Europe to strengthen its position in European itineraries

In a strategic move to enhance its presence in the European cruise market, Guernsey UK has rejoined Cruise Europe as a regional member. This decision aims to bolster the island's visibility among cruise operators and integrate it more effectively into Northern European itineraries. The reaffiliation coincides with a broader initiative to revitalize Guernsey's cruise sector, which has faced challenges in recent years.

The island's cruise operations have experienced fluctuations, with passenger numbers dropping to fewer than 40,000 in 2024, a significant decline from the 115,000 recorded in 2019. Factors contributing to this downturn include adverse weather conditions leading to canceled visits and the broader impacts of Brexit, which have affected the frequency of calls by certain cruise lines.

To counter these challenges, Guernsey's cruise operations manager, Mark Renouf, has indicated a shift in strategy. Rather than focusing solely on attracting smaller, high-end cruise ships, the island now seeks a balanced mix of small, medium, and large vessels to diversify its cruise offerings and appeal to a broader range of passengers.

Infrastructure developments are also underway to accommodate this diversified approach. Notably, changes at the harbor now allow ships under 134 meters in length to berth directly alongside in St. Peter Port, facilitating easier passenger disembarkation and reducing reliance on tendering operations .

Looking ahead, the cruise schedule for 2025 appears promising, with passenger numbers already projected to surpass those of 2024. The return of major cruise lines, including Carnival and AIDA Cruises, is anticipated to contribute to this uptick. Carnival's Legend, with a capacity of 2,549 passengers, is scheduled for a visit in 2026, while AIDA's Sol, accommodating 2,686 passengers, has three visits planned.

Guernsey's renewed membership in Cruise Europe is expected to facilitate greater collaboration with other ports and destinations, enhancing its appeal to cruise operators seeking diverse and enriching itineraries for their passengers.
