Lithuania's Klaipėda Port prepares new cruise terminal: quay construction underway

Klaipėda Port has advanced into a significant phase of its cruise terminal project, as the first construction materials have now arrived and quay works have commenced.

A shipment of metal piles—dispatched by sea from Antwerp (Belgium) aboard the general cargo vessel Benabell G (IMO 9864772)—constitutes approximately 40% of the materials required for quay foundations, thereby avoiding disruption to city roads.

The installation of piles marks the foundational stage, supporting and stabilizing the future quays against the rigors of sea and weather. Prior to this, dredging operations were conducted to prepare the seabed.

Works have been entrusted to UAB Tilsta, the successful bidder in the 2024 tender. The company has committed to completing the works within a 3-year timeframe. The project's scope includes the reconstruction of existing quays, the construction of new ones, and the provision of seafront infrastructure.

Once complete, the terminal will serve both cruise vessels and local communities. The design embraces multifunctional civic space: an amphitheatre opening onto the water, pedestrian and bicycle paths, leisure areas, and venues for events will all be incorporated.

Algis Latakas of the Klaipėda State Seaport Authority described the terminal as a gateway between sea and city—not solely welcoming cruise passengers, but encouraging residents to rediscover the port as an open and vibrant harbor.
