Aboard the Spirit of Vancouver Island, shortly after departing the Tsawwassen terminal at approximately 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, September 3rd, a passenger fell overboard into the surrounding waters. The ferry promptly initiated emergency procedures, halting its course and coordinating a rapid response from the nearby vessel Queen of New Westminster, which joined the operation to assist in the recovery efforts.
Within a brief interval, the individual was rescued by the ferry’s crew and transferred safely to the dock at Tsawwassen. Paramedics awaited the rescued person onshore, and medical attention was promptly administered before transport to hospital. The passenger’s condition was reported as stable.
One onlooker aboard described the incident’s announcement—a distinct three-tone alert over the intercom—followed by a recorded message signifying a man-overboard situation. Initially mistaken for a drill, passengers soon witnessed staff moving with purpose across decks, slowing the vessel, and preparing response measures—all within minutes.
In its statement, B.C. Ferries acknowledged the emotional strain the incident may have caused and extended appreciation to both passengers for their composure and the crew and emergency personnel for their professionalism. Due to the rescue operation, the route between Tsawwassen and Swartz Bay experienced a delay of approximately one hour.
