Global Ports Holding (GPH), recognized as the largest operator of cruise ports worldwide, has observed International Coastal Cleanup Day with a coordinated campaign across its global portfolio. The initiative, titled From Every Port, For Every Coast, engaged port employees, local communities, cruise line partners, and stakeholders in activities aimed at reducing marine litter and preserving coastal environments.
Across the network, more than 250 volunteers contributed over 20 hours of work, removing in excess of one ton of waste from shorelines, beaches, and adjacent coastal areas. In addition to clearing debris, participants recorded data for use in international research on marine pollution, thereby adding a scientific dimension to the operation.
GPH’s Chief Operating Officer, Stephen Xuereb, remarked that ports, positioned between sea and shore, are well placed to assume leadership in sustainability efforts. He explained that the campaign had united colleagues, local partners, and communities in practical action, illustrating how collective responsibility can safeguard coastlines essential to maritime activity.
The company’s sustainability framework is based on three principal objectives: reducing environmental impact, supporting the development of local communities, and advancing responsible growth across its port network. Measures include energy and emission reductions, coastal protection projects, and initiatives rooted in community engagement.
The "From Every Port, For Every Coast" program represents one element of this wider strategy, reinforcing GPH’s position that ports should not only function as gateways for passengers but also as custodians of the marine and coastal environments in which they operate.
Data collected during the cleanup will inform future environmental reporting and contribute to long-term coastal protection policies across the GPH network.
