On February 20th, 2026, a framework agreement was formally concluded in Taranto (Italy) between representatives of the port authority and the private operator responsible for cruise facilities, granting approval for construction of a new terminal dedicated to cruise ship passengers at the Ionian port. The document, signed at the offices of the Port System Authority of the Ionian Sea by the Chief Operating Officer of Global Ports Holding and the President of the Authority, authorises commencement of works in October 2026 following the close of the cruise season, with completion scheduled for March 2027 ahead of the 2027 season.

The undertaking will see an investment of more than EUR 4.5 million in a purpose-built facility occupying around 2 250 square metres on the western quay of the San Cataldo pier, the primary berth for cruise ships at the port. The terminal’s design, developed with considerations for energy efficiency and operational flow, includes expanded spaces for embarkation and disembarkation processes, dedicated areas for baggage handling, and retail zones intended to display local artisanal and gastronomic products to arriving passengers. The adjacent external areas have been arranged to accommodate passenger vehicles and buses, and to provide links to an additional quay that can be used for simultaneous vessel dockings.

Proponents of the project describe the new terminal as a fundamental element in enhancing the port’s role within international cruise networks and reinforcing the position of Taranto as a competitive destination for maritime tourism. The facility is positioned as contributing to the development of related industries, stimulating economic activity both within the port and in the city and its hinterland, and strengthening the narrative of Taranto as an organised and welcoming cruising port.

The agreement and planned works reflect an ongoing effort by port stakeholders to upgrade cruise infrastructure and services at Taranto, aligning with broader initiatives that seek to integrate the port’s maritime activities into regional tourism and economic strategies.
