A passenger aboard MSC World America was medically evacuated by the United States Coast Guard/USCG after suffering a serious medical emergency while the vessel was sailing in the Caribbean.

The incident occurred while the ship was underway between Cozumel and Ocean Cay.

Information provided by a crew member on board indicated that the passenger’s condition required urgent medical attention that could not be delayed until the vessel reached its next scheduled port.

Following an assessment by the ship’s medical team, the vessel’s command contacted the USCG to request assistance. A rescue helicopter was subsequently dispatched to the ship, where USCG personnel conducted a mid-sea medical evacuation operation.

During the operation, the helicopter crew hoisted the passenger from the vessel and transported the individual to shore for further medical treatment. The medevac took place while the ship remained underway on its scheduled itinerary.

Images of the evacuation were later shared on social media within an online group of passengers traveling aboard the vessel. One passenger described the situation in an online post, stating that the ship had diverted toward Key West (FL), where a helicopter rendezvoused with the vessel to retrieve the ill passenger. After the evacuation was completed, the ship reportedly resumed its course toward Ocean Cay.

MSC World America continues to operate its Caribbean itinerary following the incident.

The evacuation highlighted the established cooperation between cruise vessels and maritime rescue authorities, which enables rapid response to medical emergencies at sea.
