Port of Cork Company and Belfast Harbour Commissioners have signed a Memorandum of Understanding establishing a strategic partnership intended to advance offshore wind energy infrastructure and strengthen cruise tourism across the island of Ireland.

The agreement, set to run for ten years, creates a formal framework for cooperation between the two largest cruise ports on the island. Through the arrangement, the ports will coordinate efforts on major infrastructure initiatives, environmental innovation and digital transformation, while drawing on their combined operational experience to support economic development in both the northern and southern parts of the island.

A central element of the partnership concerns the development of infrastructure capable of supporting the offshore wind industry. The two ports intend to cooperate in meeting the logistical and operational requirements of the sector’s supply chain, with the objective of positioning both Cork and Belfast as important logistical bases for offshore wind farm projects planned in the Irish Sea.

The agreement also includes a commitment to expand cruise tourism. Under this framework, the ports will coordinate marketing efforts and improvements to cruise facilities in order to enhance the passenger experience and increase tourism spending in the region. The initiative builds on existing cooperation through Cruise Ireland, which promotes the island as a cruise destination.

Further areas of cooperation involve innovation and resilience projects, including the pursuit of joint funding opportunities for major infrastructure investments such as shore-power installations and digital development programs intended to strengthen the competitiveness of both ports.

The partnership also addresses workforce development and community engagement. Both organizations plan to align existing programs that support employment and training opportunities for younger adults, particularly in communities with limited access to maritime industry careers, with the intention of ensuring that economic benefits generated by port activities extend more broadly across society.

Government ministers responsible for ports in both jurisdictions have welcomed the initiative. The Memorandum of Understanding was formally signed by representatives of the Port of Cork Company and Belfast Harbour Commissioners and entered into effect immediately.
