Aboard the EUROPA 2, the integration of performing arts into passenger operations has been further developed through a renewed collaboration with Rafael Bonachela. The choreographer marked the debut of a new work during a recent voyage, establishing the basis for continued artistic programming in partnership with Hapag-Lloyd Cruises.
The production, titled Pulso, was introduced on board as part of a broader sequence of performances and has since been incorporated into the vessel’s cultural schedule. The work follows earlier presentations and forms part of an ongoing series of artistic engagements designed for a limited-capacity audience. Bonachela, whose career includes long-standing leadership of the Sydney Dance Company, is recognised for a choreographic approach combining structured movement with contemporary interpretation.
It was indicated that the commission to create and present a new piece at sea represented an unusual undertaking, offering both the choreographer and his company a distinct setting in which to develop and stage contemporary dance. The experience was described as a departure from conventional venues, with the vessel providing a platform where performance and travel intersect.
Additional works, including Somos, have also been presented during the programme, with performances staged during port calls in the Canary Islands. These productions draw on themes related to cultural identity and interpersonal dynamics, translated into a structured language of movement consistent with the choreographer’s established style.
The vessel itself operates with a comparatively limited passenger capacity, allowing for closer interaction between performers and audience. This configuration supports a programme that integrates live performance with the broader cruise experience, aligning artistic presentation with the itinerary and onboard schedule.
The collaboration is set to continue into subsequent seasons, with Bonachela’s work scheduled to form part of future voyages, including itineraries extending between Cape Town and Port Louis. Company representatives have indicated that the continuation of this partnership reflects a sustained emphasis on curated cultural programming within the line’s operations, combining maritime travel with structured artistic content.
