Virgin Voyages has commenced its first Alaska season with departures from Seattle aboard Brilliant Lady, marking the cruise line’s long-anticipated entry into the North Pacific market. The adults-only operator has positioned the deployment as both an expansion of its itinerary programme and a response to sustained demand from repeat passengers seeking longer and more destination-focused voyages.
The season introduces a series of voyages through Alaska and the Pacific Northwest, accompanied by a range of regionally developed onboard experiences. New additions include two Alaska-specific members of the Happenings Cast, alongside a Cultural Heritage Guide from Alaska Native Voices, intended to provide broader context on the region’s landscapes, wildlife and Indigenous traditions.
Virgin Voyages stated that preparations for the Alaska debut had involved extended collaboration with local communities, environmental organisations and port authorities. More than half of the shore excursions offered during the season are operated by sustainable tour providers, including companies certified through programmes such as Adventure Green Alaska and Travelife. The vessel’s marine team also completed specialist training with ORCA focused on whale awareness and collision-avoidance procedures, while the ship will observe voluntary speed reductions in sensitive marine areas. Brilliant Lady additionally operates with advanced wastewater treatment systems and shore power capability.
Michelle Bentubo, chief operating officer of Virgin Voyages, indicated that Alaska’s environmental and cultural significance required a considered approach to deployment, noting that the company had worked closely with local organisations to ensure the region’s character and communities were represented appropriately throughout the programme.
Among the new onboard roles, the “Lumberjack” serves as an interpreter of Alaska’s forestry and frontier heritage, while the “Naturalist” provides informal presentations and small-group discussions focused on glaciers, marine life and regional ecology. Selected voyages will also feature participation from Alaska Native Voices, offering workshops and conversations centred on Indigenous culture, storytelling and contemporary Alaskan life.
Additional programming created for the season includes destination briefings, art sessions inspired by Alaska’s landscapes, cocktail workshops using regional flavours and interactive trivia events themed around local maritime and wildlife traditions.
The culinary programme has also been adapted for the northern deployment, with Virgin Voyages introducing a selection of Alaska-inspired dishes across its restaurants for the duration of the season. Regional seafood, including king crab, halibut and black cod, forms the basis of several menu additions served throughout the ship’s dining venues. Beverage offerings have likewise been revised to reflect cooler operating conditions, with expanded selections of hot drinks and Pacific Northwest beers.
Retail spaces aboard Brilliant Lady now include products and artisan goods linked to the Pacific Northwest, alongside cold-weather apparel developed for the Alaska itineraries.
The Alaska season forms part of Brilliant Lady’s broader inaugural North American deployment. Virgin Voyages confirmed that the ship will operate voyages from Seattle and Vancouver through September before repositioning for additional itineraries along the Pacific Coast, Panama Canal and Caribbean.
