Former expedition cruise ship Ocean Endeavour acquired to support Greenland mining project

The former expedition cruise vessel Ocean Endeavour has entered a new phase of its operational life after being acquired by U.S.-based mining and development company Critical Metals Corp. The ice-strengthened ship has been purchased for EUR 7.5 million and will be deployed as accommodation for personnel working on the company's Tanbreez rare earth project in southern Greenland.

The vessel, which was previously owned by SunStone Marine Group and operated under charter by a number of expedition cruise companies, has attracted attention in recent months after serving as accommodation for Danish and NATO personnel during the Arctic Endurance exercise in Greenland. Earlier this year, the ship was chartered by the Danish Defence to support military operations in the Arctic.

Originally constructed in Poland in 1982 as the Soviet passenger ferry Konstantin Simonov, the 137-metre vessel operated in the Baltic before passing through several owners. During the early 2000s it was converted into a cruise ship, later undergoing further modifications in 2015 to support expedition cruising in Arctic and Antarctic waters. SunStone Marine Group announced the vessel's sale earlier this year.

Critical Metals Corp. stated that Ocean Endeavour was selected because of its proven capability in polar environments and its suitability for year-round operations in Greenland. Once stationed alongside the Tanbreez project near Qaqortoq, the vessel will provide self-contained accommodation for up to 300 project personnel, reducing pressure on the limited hotel and housing capacity available in the surrounding communities while also supporting logistics and workforce management.

Company Chairman Tony Sage indicated that the acquisition would strengthen operational efficiency, improve logistical support and enhance workforce safety as development of the Tanbreez project progresses. He also noted that the company intends to continue working with local Greenlandic businesses for services such as provisioning, transportation and waste management, while maintaining operations that are appropriate for the region's environmental and community conditions.

Critical Metals acquired a controlling interest in the Tanbreez rare earth project in 2024. The deposit is regarded as one of the world's largest undeveloped rare earth resources and contains significant concentrations of heavy rare earth elements considered important for defence applications, renewable energy technologies and advanced manufacturing.
