MSC Cruises expands digital remote check-in to streamline embarkation

MSC Cruises has begun rolling out a new Digital Remote Check-In service designed to reduce embarkation-day processing times by allowing guests to complete cruise check-in and travel document verification before arriving at the terminal.

The service was introduced in Seattle during MSC Poesia's inaugural Alaska season and is currently available to passengers using MSC Cruises' official airport transfer programme. Under the system, travellers can complete cruise check-in procedures at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport before being transferred to the port. Upon arrival at the terminal, they are able to bypass the traditional document verification and check-in lines and proceed directly to security screening and boarding.

The Seattle deployment complements the Port Valet programme, which enables participating cruise passengers to transfer luggage directly to the airport for their return flights. Together, the services are intended to reduce waiting times both at the cruise terminal and at the airport.

MSC Cruises plans to extend Digital Remote Check-In to additional embarkation ports worldwide. The company has also indicated that future phases may include check-in facilities at airports, hotels and other pre-cruise locations, broadening the service beyond passengers using official airport transfers.

The initiative forms part of a wider technology programme aimed at improving the passenger journey from arrival through embarkation and throughout the cruise. MSC Cruises recently introduced MSC Concierge, an AI-powered assistant integrated into the MSC for Me app, which provides onboard support and information in multiple languages and is intended to reduce queues at guest services desks.

MSC Cruises CEO Gianni Onorato stated that the company is combining digital technology with onboard hospitality to offer guests a more personalised and efficient travel experience. The new Digital Remote Check-In service represents an extension of that strategy by shifting part of the embarkation process away from the cruise terminal and reducing the time passengers spend waiting in line before boarding.

MSC Poesia will continue operating Alaska itineraries from Seattle through September 2026 while the cruise line evaluates and expands the new check-in system across its network.
