The Isles of Scilly recorded 46 cruise ship calls carrying ~19,000 passengers during the 2026 season, with no cancellations attributed to weather conditions. The final call of the season took place on September 15th, when Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines’ Bolette anchored in Crow Sound, allowing passengers to go ashore on St Mary’s and Tresco.
The result is notable for a destination where cruise ships are dependent on tender operations. Although tender ports are generally considered more vulnerable to weather-related cancellations, the geographical characteristics of the Isles of Scilly and the experience of local marine operators have helped maintain a high level of operational reliability.
Located off the coast of Cornwall in southwest England, the islands have two dedicated cruise ship anchorages. Their locations provide alternative options depending on prevailing wind and sea conditions, while locally operated tender boats can continue to operate in conditions that may be more challenging for a cruise ship's own tender fleet.
Another factor is the increasing involvement of local port agency and excursion management providers in operational decisions. Cruise ship masters and operators can consult local representatives before cancelling a call, obtaining assessments based on current conditions rather than relying exclusively on forecast data.
Tom Jackman, Managing Director of Scillonian Marine Consultants, said that local knowledge could be particularly important when forecast conditions appeared unfavourable. He cited a May call by a smaller cruise ship during a period when forecasts indicated winds exceeding 20 knots and swell of 4+ metres. Despite those conditions, the vessel was able to anchor in an area with very limited swell and the scheduled visit proceeded.
Jackman explained that assessments take into account the characteristics of individual ships, their tender arrangements and the conditions at each of the available anchorages. This allows operators to provide cruise lines with a more detailed assessment of the actual conditions affecting a potential call.
The 2026 season also included two maiden calls. SeaDream Yacht Club's SeaDream II visited the Isles of Scilly for the first time, while Vestland Classic included the destination in an anniversary voyage marking 70 years since the launch of Nordstjernen. Both maiden calls took place on the same day in September.
The destination is already scheduled to receive SeaDream Yacht Club's SeaDream I in September 2027, as local authorities and tourism operators seek to expand the number of cruise calls and attract additional luxury cruise vessels.
Jackman said the 100% call success rate demonstrated the importance of the islands' two anchorages, the capabilities of local tender operators and the contribution of local maritime knowledge. He also identified cruise tourism as an important component of the islands' visitor economy and said the 2026 results could support efforts to attract additional cruise lines.
Cruise passengers visiting the Isles of Scilly can spend time on St Mary's, take part in excursions and wildlife-spotting activities, and visit Tresco's Abbey Garden. The destination is seeking to further develop these offerings as part of its strategy to increase its presence in the UK cruise market.
