Police were called to the scene shortly after 3 AM following a report of a public order accident. They were told that a group of 6 men had refused to vacate the ferry terminal after being asked to leave by the staff.
According to police, one of the men had then boarded a waiting ferry and had refused to leave so specialist officers attended.
By 6 AM, the 31-year-old man had been arrested on suspicion of "aggravated trespass and causing a public nuisance."
Currently, he remains in custody.
The 3 AM crossing from Portsmouth failed to operate because of the accident with the last vessel arriving in port, Victoria of Wight, at just before 2 AM.
