Ferrol is a city located in the Province of A Coruna in Galicia, north-western Spain, on the Atlantic coast. In 2014, the city had a population of 70,390 making it the 5th largest Galicia's settlement. With Ortegal the north and Eume to the south, Ferrol forms Ferrolterra conurbation, the 3rd largest in Galicia with a total population of over 203,450. Ferrol's total area is 81.9 km2 (31.6 ml2).
For most of its history, the city has been a very important naval shipbuilding centre, being the capital of the Maritime Department of the North of the Spanish Navy since the time of early Bourbons. Before that, during the 17th century, the city of Ferrol was the major arsenal in Europe. Currently, the city is also known as home of Navantia's shipbuilding yards.
Ferrol was the birthplace of Francisco Franco (Spanish General and dictator) in 1892, and was officially named El Ferrol del Caudillo between 1938-1982. It was also the birthplace of Pablo Iglesias, founder of the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party, in 1850.
