Gozo is an island of Maltese archipelago in Mediterranean Sea. Gozo Island is part of Malta and the second-largest in the archipelago after the island of Malta itself. In comparison with its southeastern neighbour, the island of Gozo is more rural and famous for its scenic hills, featured on its coat of arms.
Gozo Island has long been associated with Ogygia Island, home of Calypso, a nymph in Homer's Odyssey. In the story, Calypso, who was in love with Odysseus and possessed great supernatural powers, holds him captive for years, until finally releasing him to go on with his journey back home.
In March 2014 the island had a population of around 37,340 people (all of Malta combined has about 445,000). Gozo's inhabitants are known as Gozitans (Għawdxin in Maltese). It is rich in historic locations like the Ggantija temples, which, together with the other Malta's Megalithic Temples, are among the oldest free-standing structures in the world. The total area of Gozo Island is 67 km2 (26 ml2).
The island of Gozo is rural in character. Compared to the main Malta Island Malta, it is less developed. A remarkable geologic feature of Gozo Island is the Azure Window. It is a natural stone arch which was formed millions of years ago after the collapse of a limestone cave. There are a lot of beaches on the isle, as well as seaside resorts, popular with locals and tourists alike. The most popular are Xlendi Bay and Marsalforn. Gozo Island is considered one of the top Mediterranean diving destinations and a centre for water sports.
Gozo Island is also famous for its "Karnival" (carnival). The celebrations, including bands and fireworks, are important tradition on the island in the summer season.
A new ferry terminal was opened in 2008. It has a building for around 600 passengers and a parking for 200 cars. The small town is overlooked by Fort Chambray (built 1749 by the Knights of Saint John). Mgarr also has an yacht marina. In 2010 the yacht marina was privatised (now operated by Harbour Management Company Ltd).
Malta Island's port is the capital city La Valletta.
