Hanoi is the capital of Vietnam and country's 2nd largest city. In 2009 its population was estimated at 2.6 mill for urban districts and 7 mill for metropolitan jurisdiction. In 2015, the population of Hanoi was estimated at 7.7 mill people. During the period 1010-1802, Hanoi was the major political centre of Vietnam. From 1902 to 1954 it served as French Indochina's capital. From 1954 to 1976, Hanoi was the capital of North Vietnam. In 1976 it became the capital of reunified Vietnam, after the North's victory in Vietnam War.

Hanoi city lies on the right bank of Red River and is 120 km (75 miles) west of Hai Phong city and 1,760 km (1,090 miles) north of Ho Chi Minh City. In October 2010 Hanoi officially marked 1000 years since its establishment. The famous Hanoi Ceramic Mosaic Mural is a 4-kilometer ceramic mosaic mural that was created to mark the occasion.

Hanoi is a picturesque city, often dubbed "Paris of the East". With its over 2 dozen lakes, thousands of French colonial-era buildings and tree-fringed boulevards, Hanoi is a major tourist attraction. Various options for entertainment can be found throughout the city. Traditional and modern theaters, cinemas, dance clubs, karaoke bars, bowling alleys, and a wealth of opportunities for shopping provide leisure activities for both tourists and locals. Hanoi has been labelled one of the top ten cities for shopping in Asia (Water Puppet Tours). In recent years, the number of art galleries that exhibit Vietnamese art has increased dramatically, now including galleries like "Nhat Huy" of Huynh Thong Nhat. Water puppetry is a popular traditional form of entertainment, shown at the Thang Long Water Puppet Theatre.
