Hydra is one of the Saronic Islands (Greece), situated in the Aegean Sea between Saronic Gulf and Argolic Gulf. Hydra Island is separated from Peloponnese by a close strip of water. In antiquity, the island was famous as Hydrea (derived from the Greek word "water"), which is a reference to the island's springs.
The municipality of Hydra includes the islands Hydra (with an area of 52 km2 /20.1ml2), Dokos (13.5 km2 /5.2ml2), and several uninhabited islets. Hydra province was one of the provinces of Piraeus Prefecture. It was abolished 2006. There is one main town, famous just as "Hydra port". In 2011 it had a population of 1,900. It features a crescent-shaped harbor. Around it is centered a strand of galleries, shops, markets and restaurants that cater to locals (Hydriots) and tourists.
Hydra largely depends on tourism. Athenians account for sizable segment of island's visitors. Hydrofoils and catamarans out of Piraeus, some 69 km (37 nautical miles) away, serve Hydra, and first stop at Poros before visiting Spetses. A passenger ferry service provides an alternative to Hydrofoils, running to Metochi on Peloponnese coast from Hydra Harbor.
The only motor vehicles on Hydra Island are rubbish trucks, since by law, motorcycles and cars are not allowed. Mules, donkeys and horses, as well as water taxis provide public transportation. Island's inhabited area is so compact that you can walk everywhere.
Hydra benefits from plenty of bays and natural harbors. The island has a high maritime culture. It is a popular yachting destination and home of Kamini Yacht Club, a famous international yacht club based in Kamini port.
