Lacepede Islands, often referred to simply as Lacepedes, are a group of 4 islands situated off Western Australia's Kimberley coast, about 120 km (75 ml) north of Broome.
The islands are about 30 km (19 ml) from Dampier Peninsula, from which are separated via Lacepede Channel. Lacepede Islands are important for the breeding there seabirds.
The island group was named on August 5, 1801 by Nicolas Baudin (1754-1803) during an expedition around Australia, in honour of Bernard Germain de Lacepede (1756-1825, French naturalist), who described a few Australian fish species. The islands' name was first charted on Freycinet Map of 1811.
Lacepede group (originally christened Napoleon, Grant and Victoria islands) is a 12-kilometre (7.5-mile) long chain of 4 islands popular as East Island, West Island, Middle Island and Sandy Island. They are all tiny, low spits of coral rubble and coarse sand, lying atop platform coral reef. Lacepede Islands are treeless, though supporting low vegetation. Their average annual rainfall is around 750 mm. East Island is where the East Island Lighthouse is located.
Lacepede Islands are A-class reserve run by Department of Environment and Conservation. In 1986 rats were eradicated, allowing the recolonisation of the isles by nesting seabirds, the most important breeding habitat in Western Australia for green turtles. There had been sighting of probable Omura's whale, one of the least known and newly described baleen whales.
