Port Angeles is a city in and county seat of Clallam County, WA, United States. With a population of 19,040 as of the 2010 census, Port Angeles is the largest city found in the county. The population was estimated at 19,450 in 2015 by Office of Financial Management. Port Angeles has a total area of 37.61 km2 (14.52 ml2).
Port Angeles has a long and narrow glacial morraine, Ediz Hook, which projects north-easterly nearly 3 miles into the Strait of Juan de Fuca. It creates a vast, natural deep-water harbor defended from the storms and swells moving predominantly eastward down the Strait of Juan de Fuca from the Pacific Ocean. The harbor is deep enough and provides anchorage for big ocean-going ships such as cruise ships and tankers. Vancouver Island's south shore and the city of Victoria BC are visible to the north across the Strait.
In 1791 city's harbor was dubbed Port of Our Lady of the Angels (Puerto de Nuestra Senora de los Angeles) by Spanish explorer Francisco de Eliza (1759-1825). By the middle of the 19th cent., after settlement by English speakers from the U.S., the name was shortened and partly anglicized to its current "Port Angeles Harbor" form.
Port Angeles shelters the Peninsula College. It is also the birthplace of the football hall John Elway. Port Angeles' residents include famous artists and writers. The city is served by William R.Fairchild International Airport. Ferry service is offered across the Strait of Juan de Fuca to Victoria BC, Canada on mv Coho.
